WolfPatch
=========
What does it do?
Wolfpatch does some simple processing on the sound samples in Wolfenstein
3D in order to make them louder and clearer. The results are quite
effective - you should find things all together more blood-curdling after
the patch is carried out.
To use WolfPatch you will need 224K (or more) of memory in the "next" slot
and at least 3MB of free hard disk space. (You can actually get by with
less, around 1.5MB, but this is not recommended, since WolfPatch keeps a
backup that will fill most of that, and ADFS likes to have at least 1MB
free on hard disks at all times.)
Does it modify my original Wolfenstein 3D disks?
No - the patch can only update a hard disk version of Wolfenstein 3D, and
it keeps a copy of the original (unmodified) file. Your original disks are
not touched. In the unlikely event of a problem, you can always reinstall
Wolfenstein 3D (though this will mean that you will have lost your
hi-score tables).
However, note that:
YOU USE WOLFPATCH ENTIRELY AT YOUR OWN RISK!
No liability for any loss or damage to your data that occurs through the
use of WolfPatch (either directly or indirectly) can be accepted. Note
also that WolfPatch is neither produced by, nor has it any connection with,
Powerslave Software, Id Software, Inc. or the University of Glasgow (my
current employers).
That said, I haven't found any problems so far, and furthermore, the
author of the Acorn conversion of Wolfenstein 3D, Eddie Edwards, has seen
the patch and pronounced it "cool", so I think it should be OK!
How to use WolfPatch
Its easy. Just open the filer window on your hard disk that contains the
"!Wolf" application so that it has been "seen" by the Filer. Then run
WolfPatch by double-clicking on it. WolfPatch will run and update Wolf
accordingly. It takes a couple of minutes. Once the message "All
finished!" appears, you can use your new *improved* Wolfenstein 3D
immediately. (And you won't want to exchange it for two of your old ones!)
What WolfPatch has done is to preserve the file "Originals.ASWAP" in the
new file "Originals.ASWAPorig" (provided this has not already been done),
and then to modify the samples in the file "Originals.ASWAP". You should
not delete or otherwise tinker with ASWAPorig, otherwise you will not be
able undo the changes without reinstalling Wolfenstein 3D from your
original disks (not that you'd want to of course!).
What about WolfUndo?
This program just replaces the modified file with the original one to
return Wolfenstein 3D to its original state. The instructions are the
same as for WolfPatch.
